PAST TENSE


I.  Definition
Past tense is a grammatical tense that places an action or situation in the past of the current moment, or prior to some specified time that may be in the speaker's past, present, or future.

There are three (3) kinds of past tense, there are:

A.    Simple Past Tense
This tense is used to describe an event or action that happened already in a certain time in the past.






The Pattern:



B.    Past Continuous Tense
This tense is used to express the action or condition which were in progress at the time of another activity in the past or used to describe an event or an action which was happening in a certain time in the past.

C.    Past Perfect Tense
Past perfect tense is a kind of tense that is used to describe an action or an event that started in a certain time in the past too; or this tense is used to express an action or an event that had happened before the other action or action happened; or this tense is used to express something had already happened before this time.

The Pattern:




II.  Adverb Used
*Simple Past: Yesterday, last night, last week, last month, a few days ago, last week, in 1990, etc.
*Past Continuous Tense: at the time like this, yesterday, at 7 o’clock last night, etc.
*Past perfect tense: from 1945, once, twice, etc.


III.  Examples:
·     *Simple past tense
(+) I went to Bogor last holiday.
(-) Ina was not sick yesterday.
(?) Did you meet Lola last night?

·     *Past continuous tense
(+) They were waiting me at the bus stop.
(-) The cat was not being there last night.
(?) Were you making those cars?

·     *Past perfect tense
(+) I had eaten when you was swimming yesterday.
(-) I had not been tired because the competition.
(?) Had Lusi got her cell phone back?
